ACSR HONOURS SETSWANA PRACTIONERS

Fifteen Setswana language practitioners were recently honoured by the Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation (Acsr) at a special event in Rustenburg.

The honoured personalities included authors, publishers, television and radio scriptwriters and actors. They were each given a certificate of appreciation, signed by MEC Virginia Tlhapi, and a cheque of R15 000.

“The idea is to recognise the valuable efforts of the Setswana language practitioners in contributing towards the development of the language,’’ said MEC Tlhapi. ‘’We developed these awards to inspire young and budding writers to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors.’’

Those honoured were Jack Bahumi Leseyane, Pheko Philemon Leseyane, Oupa Keorapetse, Bogatsu, Vera Khutsafalo Motsilanyane, Prof Jacob Ediya Setshedi, Masego Timothy Mmileng, Dr Joseph Motlhasedi Ntsime, Hilda Tlhapi Maithufi, Thapelo Moraka, Zacharia Sephai Dipale, Seipati Setswakae Motshwane, Letlotlo Zacharia Sikwane, Kabelo Stephen Naledi, Kenalemang Kgoroyadira and Dikeledi Nokwane.

The first Writers Awards event was held in 2019 to honour Setswana writers, composers and similar practitioners. As it was a pilot project one person, Mr B.D.Magoleng, was given an award. He has since passed on.  In 2020, the project grew and 15 writers were given the awards. They were from various genres including short stories, novel, drama, radio drama and music composition.

“We were looking at people who were Setswana activists, who contributed in developing Setswana. These are the people who wanted to preserve revitalize and promote Setswana, thereby enhancing a sense of pride among the speakers of the language,’’ added Mme Tlhapi.

Photo : Maboni Kgabi Recognising and honouring the women who fought for the liberation of South Africa is one aspect in our history government cannot over look. These were the words of MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation (Acsr), Mme Virginia Tlhapi, during the provincial Women’s Day celebration 2021 in Lehurutshe. The highlight of the event was the unveiling of a monument in Welbedacht, Lehurutshe, to honour the local women who marched against Pass Laws in 1956. They were brutally stopped by the police on their way to hand over their demands to the Commissioner in Zeerust. The event was a collaboration between Acsr and Tlhako Ya Pele, a cultural and historic research institute based in Zeerust. Photo : Kabelo Selebogo Scores of traditional healers, indigenous knowledge systems practitioners and cultural activists from different parts of the country on Saturday. July 23 gathered in Kuruman, Magojaneng Village, for the unveiling of the tombstone of a sanusi, Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa. The renowned traditional healer was born on July 21, 1921 and died on March 25, 2020 at the age of 98. Before he departed, Mutwa performed a traditional cleansing ceremony in 2018 at Lotlamoreng Dam Cultural Village in Mahikeng where he stayed. In the same year, the historian, prophet, cultural and heritage activist, was presented with Usiba Award by the national Department of Arts and Culture for his contribution to indigenous knowledge and preservation of heritage.
