Deputy President David Mabuza officially launched the Vooma Vaccination Weekend in 2021 in Rustenburg. He was accompanied by North West Premier Bushy Maape and Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation (Acsr) MEC Galebekwe Tlhapi.

Vooma Vaccination Weekends aim to mobilise citizens and people living in South Africa to get vaccinated as a means to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event was supported by top artists from the North West and around the country, including Grammy-award-winning Ladysmith Black Mambazo and musician-cum-media personality Stoan Seate.

Interacting with Rustenburg residents Deputy President Mabuza urged members of the public to vaccinate and make use of mobile vaccinations centres.  “Vaccination is our only chance to reduce infections, to reduce chances of severe illness and to reduce chances of hospitalisation as well as prevent unnecessary loss of life.”

Premier Bushy Maape appealed to young people to vaccinate as North West province statistics indicated that older people were vaccinating more than young people.

He added that North West Provincial Government was now taking vaccination sites to the people wherever they congregated.

Orlando Pirates top supporter Mama Joy and her Kaizer Chiefs counterpart Sadam Maake were amongst sport fanatics who teamed up for the vaccination drive. Also present were netball North West Flames vice-captain Didintle Keebine, ex-Mamelodi Sundowns star Lovers Mohlala and Olympic athlete Galaletsang Ramorowa.

Artists included poet and actress Boikanyo Botlhale, gospel star Bucy Radebe and the Diale Brass Band.

The vaccination launch was incorporated with National Recreation Day which provides an opportunity for community members to actively be involved in recreation activities and aerobics to improve health and wellbeing
