Director for Sports Management in the Department of ACSR, Mr George Marindi with some of the players and technical staff during the handing over of sport attire to Mahikeng based ladies soccer team, Golden Ladies at Bonno Lodge in Mahikeng.

MAHIKENG – Mahikeng-based top-flight women’s soccer team, Golden Ladies, have expressed their joy at receiving a set of soccer kit from Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation (ACSR) MEC, Ms Galebekwe Tlhapi.

The gesture is one of the many responsibilities that the department has undertaken to boost capacity-building among local clubs within communities.

Golden Ladies is the only team in the North West that plays in the highest women’s soccer league in the country, facing opponents such as Mamelodi Sundowns and University of the Western Cape, among others.

Community sport is one of the most important parts of sport development as it provides the youth with options for personal growth.

Mme Tlhapi said government was very clear on its mandate ensure that by 2030 the  majority of South Africans were physically active. She added that it was also important that outdoor activities were encouraged to curb obesity.

The North West province has shown over the years that there was a lot of talent and what needed to be done was to play a leading role in the transformation of sports.

“One of the ways that we can ensure that there is revival in community sport is by providing the necessary resources by granting our players equal opportunity to excel in their chosen field.

“We can succeed if we provide the necessary support to unlock the barriers that halt the advancement of sport within communities”, added MEC Tlhapi.

Owner and founder of Golden Ladies, Ms Semphete Mosweusweu said she felt honoured by the support she received from the department.  She further said the gesture would boost the morale of the players.

“We thank the department for the role it is playing in making sure that talent is unleashed and nurtured. With this support we promise to do more,” said Mosweusweu.

Monica Schalkwyk, 28 year-old player, said the support would go a long way in building confidence amongst players.

“We feel delighted that the Department is giving us support where there is need. We are given an opportunity to shine and put our province on the map,” said Schalkwyk.
