NW TO HOST ANNUAL SPORTS AWARDS
By Vusi Kama
The North West Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and
Recreation (Acsr) will on March 4 hold the 2021 Provincial Sports Awards at Sun
City Superbowl. Hosted in association with the Provincial Sports Confederation,
the weekend’s event is in place of last year’s, which could not be held owing
to the Covid-19 regulations.
Athletes, coaches, journalists and administrators will be
decorated in 21 categories, including Premier’s and MEC’s Awards.
“The idea is to honour individuals and teams from our
communities and schools who have excelled both on and off the field over the
past 12 months,’’ said Acsr MEC Mme Virginia Tlhapi. “The awards are held in
line with the South African Sport and Recreation Plan.’’
The event will also recognise men and women with
disabilities. Except for the Sport Star of the Year award – which is determined
by popular vote – all the awards are determined by a panel of experts. The
other exceptions are the MEC’s and the Premier’s Awards.
The rest of the categories
are: Sports Administrator of the Year, Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of
the Year, Sportsman of the Year with a Disability, Sportswoman of the Year with
a Disability, Sport Team of the Year, Young Athlete of the Year, Provincial
Federation of the Year, Community-based Sports and Recreation Programme of the
Year, Journalist of the Year (Print), Journalist of the Year (Electronic
media), Photographer of the Year, School Team of the Year, Developing School
Team of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Indigenous Games Team of the Year.
The last Awards ceremony was
held in 2019 in Klerksdorp. The 2022 edition is expected to take place later in
the year.
