 NW TO HOST ANNUAL SPORTS AWARDS

The North West Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation (Acsr) will on March 4 hold the 2021 Provincial Sports Awards at Sun City Superbowl. Hosted in association with the Provincial Sports Confederation, the weekend’s event is in place of last year’s, which could not be held owing to the Covid-19 regulations.

Athletes, coaches, journalists and administrators will be decorated in 21 categories, including Premier’s and MEC’s Awards.

“The idea is to honour individuals and teams from our communities and schools who have excelled both on and off the field over the past 12 months,’’ said Acsr MEC Mme Virginia Tlhapi. “The awards are held in line with the South African Sport and Recreation Plan.’’

The event will also recognise men and women with disabilities. Except for the Sport Star of the Year award – which is determined by popular vote – all the awards are determined by a panel of experts. The other exceptions are the MEC’s and the Premier’s Awards.

The rest of the categories are: Sports Administrator of the Year, Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Sportsman of the Year with a Disability, Sportswoman of the Year with a Disability, Sport Team of the Year, Young Athlete of the Year, Provincial Federation of the Year, Community-based Sports and Recreation Programme of the Year, Journalist of the Year (Print), Journalist of the Year (Electronic media), Photographer of the Year, School Team of the Year, Developing School Team of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Indigenous Games Team of the Year.

Amongst the attendees at this year’s ceremony will be Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Mr Nathi Mthethwa and Sports MEC’s from different provinces.

The last Awards ceremony was held in 2019 in Klerksdorp. The 2022 edition is expected to take place later in the year.

Photo : Maboni Kgabi Recognising and honouring the women who fought for the liberation of South Africa is one aspect in our history government cannot over look. These were the words of MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation (Acsr), Mme Virginia Tlhapi, during the provincial Women’s Day celebration 2021 in Lehurutshe. The highlight of the event was the unveiling of a monument in Welbedacht, Lehurutshe, to honour the local women who marched against Pass Laws in 1956. They were brutally stopped by the police on their way to hand over their demands to the Commissioner in Zeerust. The event was a collaboration between Acsr and Tlhako Ya Pele, a cultural and historic research institute based in Zeerust. Photo : Kabelo Selebogo Scores of traditional healers, indigenous knowledge systems practitioners and cultural activists from different parts of the country on Saturday. July 23 gathered in Kuruman, Magojaneng Village, for the unveiling of the tombstone of a sanusi, Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa. The renowned traditional healer was born on July 21, 1921 and died on March 25, 2020 at the age of 98. Before he departed, Mutwa performed a traditional cleansing ceremony in 2018 at Lotlamoreng Dam Cultural Village in Mahikeng where he stayed. In the same year, the historian, prophet, cultural and heritage activist, was presented with Usiba Award by the national Department of Arts and Culture for his contribution to indigenous knowledge and preservation of heritage.
