JOUBERTON COMMUNITY TO RECEIVE BOOKS ON WORLD BOOK AND COPY RIGHTS DAY


About 6000 books will be donated to the Jouberton Community and Stakeholders during World Book and Copyright Day on April 20 and 21 at Matlosana Local Municipality in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District.

The World Book and Copyright Day event is a collaboration between the North West Provincial Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation (ACSR), The National Library of South Africa (NLSA), National Library for the Blind (NLB) and the City of Matlosana Local Municipality.

World Book and Copyright Day is a celebration to promote the enjoyment of books and reading. Every year on April 23 celebrations take place all over the world to recognize the magical power of books - a link between the past and the future, a bridge between generations and across cultures.

The objectives of the event are: To raise awareness about the importance of reading; to promote literature in South Africa’s indigenous languages; to reach out and give people easy access to books; to educate communities in taking care of their library facilities; to celebrate books and instil the love of reading amongst the citizenry; to foster the appreciation of authors and their works; to enhance the value chain around writing, publishing, and reading; and to raise awareness about the importance of copyrights.

The National Library of South Africa (NLSA) through its outreach unit, the Centre for the Book, coordinates the World Book Day campaign nationwide in partnership with Provincial Library Services.

The Centre for the Book unit is strives to develop, promote and sustain a culture of reading, writing, and publishing in all local languages and further provide easy access to books for all, which supports the objectives of World Book and Copyrights campaign.

The 2023 World Book and Copyrights Day will be commemorated under the theme “You are A Reader “, focusing on reaching out to children from disadvantaged literacy backgrounds.


The 2023 World Book and Copyrights Day programme will unfold as follows:

Day 1, 20th April:

A door to door and Commuter Reading Campaign : Donation of books to local centres, schools, shelters, commuters, local communities and advocate the importance of reading and educating communities on copyrights.

Day 2, 21st April:

The formal celebration will be hosted at Jouberton Community Hall, advocating the importance of reading, writing, and publishing in local languages and Provincial Libraries will share their active reading promotion programmes.

Photo : Maboni Kgabi Recognising and honouring the women who fought for the liberation of South Africa is one aspect in our history government cannot over look. These were the words of MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation (Acsr), Mme Virginia Tlhapi, during the provincial Women’s Day celebration 2021 in Lehurutshe. The highlight of the event was the unveiling of a monument in Welbedacht, Lehurutshe, to honour the local women who marched against Pass Laws in 1956. They were brutally stopped by the police on their way to hand over their demands to the Commissioner in Zeerust. The event was a collaboration between Acsr and Tlhako Ya Pele, a cultural and historic research institute based in Zeerust. Pic : Thato Motau Team North West bagged five medals at the 16 th National Indigenous games festival held in Margate, Kwazulu Natal, from September 24-28. The games brought together all nine provinces for a week of sports and celebration of South Africa’s National Heritage. An additional feather in the cap for the North West is that four players from the province’s Team Khokho have been selected to represent South Africa at the Kho-kho World Championships to be held this month in India. They are Linda Masina, Tebogo Mocumi, Galaletsang Tabaekae and Boitshoko Matebele from Dr Kenneth Kaunda district. They were all part of the conquering male and female teams at the Games.
