A golden opportunity missed by media and Mahikeng community. The Department condemns the disruptions of the well-organised Mahika Mahikeng media launch that was scheduled to take place on March 8 at Mmabatho Convention Centre. This was the second and final leg of the media briefings, after a very successful and well-attended media briefing held in Sandton on March 3. This was meant to be an information sharing session with media and the plans ahead. The arts sector and the community at large also missed out on receiving information about the opportunities and economic spin-offs that come with hosting Mahika Mahikeng in their own backyard. This event has not been staged for three years, against the backdrop of an already fragile economy the COVID-19 pandemic has created - affecting the arts sector negatively.   MEC MOSENOGI CONGRATULATES TETE FOR BREAKING WORLD RECORD By Kabelo Selebogo Tete Dijana sets a new world record in 50km.  Photo credit : Cuan Walker MEC for North West Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation (ACSR) Kenetswe Mosenogi has congratulated an elite athlete from Mahikeng, Tete Morena Dijana for setting a new world record after winning Nedbank Runified 50Km in a time of 2:39:03 recently in Gqerberha. Dijana smashed the record which was previously set by Stephen Ramokoka  ( 2:40:13) , who is also from the North West Province in Ramatlabama village, at the same marathon last year.   “I am thrilled to see Tete delivering a superb performance and setting a new world record,” said Mme Mosenogi. “He is placing the entire nation on the map in addition to his hometown and province. MEC for Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation (Acsr), Kenetswe Mosenogi, has congratulated all the winners honoured at the North West Sports Awards held last Saturday at Sun City. She further wished them luck with their entries into the South African Sports Awards to be held later in the year. Orlando Pirates star, Mannapule Saleng, who hails from Bloemhof, bagged Sports Star of The Year Award at the award ceremony.   The footballer, who rushed to Sun City after the Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs, complimented Junior Masangane (Mmabana Gymnastics) and Tshiamo Matlhoane (NW Gymnastics), who competed alongside him in the same category.   CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR NORTH WEST SPORTS AWARDS The North West Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation (Acsr) has made a call for nominations for the North West Sports Awards. The nominations close on February 13 (18:00). The annual North West Sports Awards have been created to recognise and honour individuals and teams who have excelled both on and off the field. The period covered for the current nominations is from April 1 to December 31, 2022. The awards are organised by the Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation and the North West Sports Confederation. “The Provincial Sports Awards are a national mandate and we are recognising sports men and women for their efforts in keeping the passion   for sport alive in the hearts of the millions in the province,” said Acsr spokesperson, Shuping Sebolecwe.
